Enel X (JuiceBox Certified Installer) and NJ Approved EV Course Certified

Many new car buyers are looking for Electric Vehicles. When purchasing a new EV there may be a few things your dealer might not discuss with you before your purchase.

Plug-in Charing versus Direct Wire Charging

Plug-In chargers have flexibility to be removed and taken with the consumer, but are limited on the output charge to 40 or less amp. The cost of the install is typically higher than that of a direct wire unit due to electrical code requirements. These requirements will soon be changed in NJ to include GFI protection on the larger receptacles when placed within a garage space.

Direct Wire chargers have a larger output capacity of 48 amps and sometimes greater. They are fixed and place and are not easily able to be relocated without the help of an electrical contractor. However leaving the charger should you be selling your home may be looked upon as a selling point and add value.

Electrical Service Size

Most homes in NJ have a 200 amp electrical service with approximately 30 to 40 spaces for breakers in the electrical panel. Some homes due to their size, appliances, and owners elected uses may prohibit the install of a larger charger.

Load Calculation

Many municipalities are requiring what is known as a load calculation. This is a mathematical calculation to determine if a home can safely operate all of it’s appliances at any one time with a National Electrical Code equation. If the calculation shows that a home does not have a large enough service the charger may be controlled by software to regulate it’s output. If the output is not large enough for the consumer additional steps to upgrade the electrical service may be taken.

Time Frame For Install

Permits are required for all installations of EV charging with the exception of existing 120 volt receptacles for basic charger and the unlikely event of an existing 240 volt 50 amp or greater receptacle.

The permitting process may take up to 21 business days per the town’s building department approving the permit.

Availability of materials has been an issue due to supply chain issues. These delays may hold up the start of your project so it is best to plan ahead.

Cost Of Install

Each installation will vary in cost. Cost factors include distance to the electrical panel, materials needed, permit cost, and code requirements.

Utility Company Programs

Currently JCP&L is offering as much as $1,500 in rebates to customers who chose to install a select model charger with an electrical contractor. Customers will submit an invoice along with other required documentation to JCP&L for reimbursement.
